The Secret In Store Cards You Should Know About

February 6, 2010

In this day and age, plenty of individuals are in search of bargains on their purchases as much as possible.  Paying less for something worth always provides some kind of feeling of satisfaction and the feeling of being wise with our spending.

Just few of the ways we can get bargains are via discount sale periods and haggling but there are a number of schemes which entice lots of individuals to sign up in the belief that they are going to get a considerable discount on every thing they procure.

One such infamous scheme are store cards.  They are much like credit cards but store cards can only be used on certain stores and their branches while credit cards can be used roughly anywhere.  People are charmed to acquire store cards generally because of promises to award a shopper up to ten percent discount on stuff they buy.

The common way store cards are being sold to customers is by way of store personnel asking you if you would like to remove 10% on your purchases.  This usually happens when you come in or leave the store but since store staffs collect incentives on these deals, it could occur at any place and anytime within the store.

Aside from the initial attractive discount offered, signing up for a store card can even grant shoppers free subscriptions to store magazines, gifts, and special previews to new items.  But in the long run, you may regret that decision due to the very lofty interest rate that are common with store cards.

More than 25% interest rate can be charged from a store card holder, which is double the regular credit card rate.  A lot of people are drawn into getting these store cards since most, if not all, of the stores that present them hold back important details that customers themselves must know about.

So how do stores still manage to draw customers into getting to sign up for their store cards?  Non-transparency for one.  They will only tell unsuspecting customers about the good things and rewards tied to their store cards and their customers wouldn’t be aware about the high annual percentage rate until their finances feel its impact  Also, stores aim for younger inexperienced consumers who are at the early point of their independent lives.

Store cards can easily get someone in debt and they can even cause someone a much larger debt than credit cards.  If you have a propensity to pass up payments or not paying in full, getting a store card may add to your financial woes.

People age 21 and above are said to own store cards and only 2/3 of them pay the monthly bills in full.  The remaining 1/3 who do not pay-off their complete monthly balance have a tendency to keep their store card debt.

If you plan to get a store card, don’t go  diving ahead as other forms might present more benefit.  Credit cards with much lower rates will in fact give more breathing space.

You should also study the form carefully and make sure you understand each and every section especially lines that have words and figures such as rates, percentage (%), monthly and annually, and numbers.  If a line or paragraph seems too hard to comprehend, take the form with you and consult someone who knows about these things such as a financial advisor or getting a debt management plan.

If you really like to have a store card, make sure you’ll be able to fully pay for it toward the end of the month.  If you’re an existing store card holder and already have debt from it, you can opt to transfer it to a credit card that offers low or 0% rate.  It is definitely feasible and it can make a big positive difference in getting you to pay-off your debt much quicker and much effectively.
